the story...
Drawn by a cherished childhood memory of visiting a tobacconist with my mother and discovering the fascinating similarity between pipe tobacco blends and aromatically fragrant loose tea, I visited Manhattan’s Barclay Rex, an elegant, Old World-style tobacconist run by its 4th generation proprietor. The shop, which is located on Pearl Street, just off Wall, across from the historic New York Cocoa Exchange, carries a dozen varieties of premium pipe tobaccos where I enjoyed exploring each of their distinctive tea-like, woody, nutty, earthy, smoky, fruity, flavored blends. If there’s a tobacciana fan in your midst, this shop comes comes highly recommended for its exceptional service and selection.
This fragrant ode to discovery draws inspiration from 16th C. Explorers who circumnavigated the globe. The composition merges traditional tobacco notes with Middle Eastern aromatics, evoking the atmosphere of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, Spice Market and neighboring streets filled with water pipe lounges. While featuring warm, spicy, nutty, boozy, chocolate tobacco, this fragrance maintains a pleasantly diffusive character distinct from the typical intensity of Middle Eastern perfumes.
The fragrance pays homage to Sir Walter Ralegh (his preferred spelling), who played a pivotal role in introducing New World tobacco to England. Though often credited for this introduction, Ralegh’s true contribution came through the Roanoke colonists he brought to England from Roanoke, Virginia, who carried tobacco with them. A renown botanist and explorer, Ralegh also ventured along the Orinoco River (the same river of Enya’s hit song, Orinoco Flow/”Sail Away”)–in search of the fabled El Dorado, embodying the courage to pursue a dream, come what may.
